Committee

Team Captain: Wei Yan

Hi everyone, as luck would have it, I have become the captain of ULA once again, it's my great pleasure to see the club grow and prosper since I first joined the team in 2005. It is my job to bring you, me and our team to glory and win a few more medals after each every competitions! I will be assisting Christine in running the beginners' courses, after whcih I will be running intermediate coaching courses, as well as selecting/training teams for major competitions. In addition, I will be the main contact between the club and ULU. If you have any questions, do ask me.

It's been eight years since I first started archery, I've shot Barebow, Longbow and am now a competitive recurve archer. I love the competitiveness of the sport but I love meeting new archers even more! I'm happy to answer all of your questions and will be even happier to have a few drinks with you. It is my sincere hope that ULA will become the best university archery team in the UK, and the most friendly club in the world. :)

I'm a second year PhD student in Institute of Cancer Research, in my spare time I enjoy hiking, orienteering, theatre and music.

Club Secretary: Ikuko Smith

Hello, my name is Ikuko. As the secretary, I will be assisting Wei in running the administrative side of the club, maintaining an up-to-date members' list and apply GNAS cards for you. I first started archery many many years ago and shot Recurve for about 4 years. Now, after many years, I decided to pick up my old bow again! There is nothing like the exhilarating feeling you get as you release the arrow into the target. If it gets sucked into the yellow bit, even better!

I'm a postdoc in the Wolfson Institute for Biomedical Research, married with two kittens.

Treasurer: Harry Parkes

For my sins I am the treasurer for this academic year, which basically means that I look after the finances of the club. This involves collecting money for the beginners course which all new archers have to do, and the collection of money to send off for GNAS licences. Obtaining a GNAS licence is obligatory for full club members as it come with insurance cover and allows you to shoot at GNAS and FITA certified tournaments. We also purchase new equipment each year for club members to use for both in our range and for competitions. Last but not least there is the small matter of working with my colleagues who run ULU and its associated committees! So if there are any finance issues you would like to discuss then either catch up with me at the training sessions or send an email to the club.

I started shooting Easter time 2008 so I have had just over a year to work on my shooting skills. I have already attained my objective for the year in getting to 1st Class Archer level. Unfortunately this is only half way up the scale with each classification getting more and more difficult to achieve! I will try my hardest to get to Bowman next year, but it wont be easy! Occasionally I shoot longbow in clout competitions at my local club in Bromley - it is so nice not to have to take a pile of allen keys and screw drivers with me on those days! I obtained my PhD from Birkbeck some time ago and I am employed at UCL and based at the Institute of Neurology in Queen Square, as the Pre-Clinical MRI Manager. I have worked at a number of UCL departments in the past including the Institute of Child Health, and Department of Medical Physics. Last year I was also the UCL Squash Club's third team captain but fortunately there were not too many clashes between archery and squash!

Equipment Officer: Dermot Madden

DermotAs equipment officer I am responsible for maintain the UCL range and keeping the club equipment in repair, if you ever have problems with gear or need advice on getting archery equipment for yourself, feel free to talk to me at any time. About myself, well I started archery in 1998 in Ireland but retired in 2005, during which I rebuilt and ran two university archery clubs and the Irish University League, was National Student Champion and Captain of the Irish University Team. Now I'm in UCL doing a PhD in Physics and started picking up archery again a few months ago, focusing on getting back up to form.
Never be afraid to ask for advice or help, archers tend to greatly enjoy helping newcomers who are interested in archery.

Student Tournaments Organiser:

Staff & Public Tournament Organiser: Minghao Zhang

Hi everyone, I am your Staff Tournament Officer. As an archery club we welcomes not only the students but also the university staffs, alumni and public members, ULA organizes open archery tournaments throughout the year besides those for students. I'm going to make sure all the none-student members have enough competitions to attend. Competition is the most exciting part in archery, so no matter you play to win, or simply to have some fun, competitions will be fun. Of course, students are also welcomed to attend these tournaments.

I started shooting in November 2008 but have already attended quite a few competitions. It's a good way to improve your skills, gain experience, make friends... or even just travel around. Currently I am a postdoc researcher at the Institute of Cancer Research. I enjoy photography, football, travel.

My name is Christine and I work in the City. I started archery at the university of Southampton 9 years ago. There is a good collection of medals for both as well as 3 MBs. I have become involved in Coaching in order to assist other archers and I am a Level 2 candidate.

Apart from travelling to competitios around the country, I enjoy reading on the train, viewing historical sites and long distance walking in Spain.
